I had an appointment with Dr. Asad Durrani on March 6 at 2:45 PM on a Friday. I booked this appointment months in advance, and it required well over a six hour round trip for me to attend because of the distance. I scheduled it carefully because I have serious eye concerns.
Previously I have been told different possible diagnoses including bilateral cataracts, possible macular degeneration, and even a possible retinal detachment that has not been definitively diagnosed. I have also been told that the wall holding the vitreous humor behind my right eye is becoming increasingly unstable, which may be causing aggressive floaters in my right eye. Overall my vision has been rapidly declining, so this appointment was very important.
Around 8:40 AM on the morning of the appointment, the office called and told me I should come in as soon as possible. The appointment had been scheduled months earlier for 2:45 PM. I havd confirmed the day before for that time. Because my eyes were going to be dilated, my boyfriend had arranged to drive me. This meant I had to ask another person to give up most of their day to help me make a six hour round trip for this appointment; a major hassle to me and my boyfriend
Being told the morning of that I needed to come in immediately was not realistic, because it takes about three hours for me to get there. As a result, the appointment was canceled.
During the call, the receptionist also responded in a tone that came across as dismissive, sassy, and disrespectful l, which added to the frustration.
After booking months in advance for an important medical issue and arranging a six hour round trip with another person's help, this experience was extremely disappointing.
Receptionist and Durrani lack professionalism
The girl at the front desk was super sweet and the nurse who took me back and started the exam made me feel really comfortable. I think her name was Monica. She was great. And then Dr. Isaacson was so nice and thorough and answered all of my questions patiently. Great experience!
I never leave reviews but I felt this experience deserved to get one. I took my 5 year daughter who has Special Needs to the PEDIATRIC ophthalmologist for an eye exam. She's never had her eyes checked by an ophthalmologist before and I was told she has astigmatism. She did very well, all things considered for the beginning of the exam - identifying shapes and letters. She then had to have her eyes dilated. Of course, she carried on and threw a fit, cried and was extremely scared. The staff was very impatient with her and I and after about 10 minutes of trying to convince her and calm her down, the assistant left to get the Dr.
Dr. Maryam Hajouni, came in and explained a few options. We could take drops home and attempt ourselves and bring her back in with her eyes dilated or we could sedate her with risks (wow, to dilate eyes?). So we gave it another shot, I held her down (my daughter is very strong) the assistant was standing there and the Dr put the drops in her eyes. When I asked if she got them in, her response was snooty and rude... "well, we will wait and see".
My daughter completed the eye exam and did very well, she was no longer scared. The Dr gives me the report... barely and just says it's "minor". But then proceeded to tell/ask me about my daughter needing to follow up with her neuropsychiatrist for her behavioral health.
Again, my daughter has diagnoses but we use AHN for her care because UPMC had an 11 month wait to see a Specialist. I thought I was at a Pediatric Eye Doctor. I felt attacked/judged by the Dr for my child's behavior/mental health and I have a hard time believing that all 5 year olds cooperate perfectly when getting their eyes dilated. It's like she never dealt with a child before and her snooping around my child's medical records and attempting to coach me on what my daughter needs OUTSIDE of eye care is completely unacceptable to me. It was none of her business what we do with our daughter. Her after visit summary was rude, also.
Anyway, I feel this doctor needs to stay in her lane and worry about her profession. Very unprofessional and impatient. I will not return to this Doctor and am tempted to switch all of my child's medical care to AHN, like I did for myself.
My surgeon for my Laser iridotomy was Dr. Andrew Williams. I Loved the whole experience, and I really from the bottom of my heart really do recommend him. From the friendly receptionist Valerie to the consultation to procedure to check up, I had excellent service and care. The procedure was well explained. From the beginning to end, my experience was great. The staff makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. Dr Andrew Wiiliams is kind, informative and extremely knowledgeable. From the examination staff to the surgery itself, I can say this is one of the most cordial, well trained and professional groups you could ask for. I am very impressed and happy with my results. Today Katrina assisted me with my eye exam. I seen Ellen Butts for my eyeglass prescription. I was confused which lens was right for me as they all look the same. She said she would show them to me 1,000 times if that what it took. You couldn't ask for a more patient doctor. Thank you UPMC
This is a tough review to write. I will start with the fact that the staff is tremendous. However, I have two appointments here so far and both have been very disappointing. I have had to leave work early TWICE as they could not schedule me any time after my work day (I am done by 3:30). And both times I have come in, I have had to wait a substantial amount of time to be seen (almost a half hour the first time and almost an hour the second.) The final straw was when I had to get new contacts and was told by the office they don't order them. I was in shock. I have to go somewhere else to get this done or call and have them shipped to me. Super upsetting and inconvenient. It's a shame because again the staff is great and it's very close to my house/work. However, I will not be coming back.
They did not tell me until arrival that they don't take vision insurance. The eye center. Does not take vision insurance - not even my UPMC vision insurance. What a world. They told me they "called a bunch and left messages" but it is 2022 and my phone does not leave my hands - there was no call and there were no messages. Why doesn't the VISION CENTER start every appointment call with "by the way, we do not take vision insurance"? Seems helpful. I took work leave time for this. Marvelous.
Aside from that, the office building is crumbling. The walls have holes. The water fountains are messily tarped over. The vending machines are broken. The elevator is from a forgotten time before safety regulations. The directory screen doesn't work so I had to ask a random person what floor I was going to.
I hope this is a shell operation for a criminal enterprise, because that's far more exciting than run of the mill incompetence and inconsiderate medical facilities.
The staff and doctors are wonderful; this rating is simply because I waited almost 1.5 hours to be seen.
First off the reception staff is wonderful. BUT...the wait after you arrive is ridiculous.
