I originally went to Dr Fung to get a general eye exam because I am not young and also to get new prescriptions. At first he seemed really nice. He didn't fit the contact lenses the normal way with samples and just wrote something down. I assumed this was because he was an ophthalmologist and had more information. Turned out the prescription was wrong (and they do have samples there that they can use, so maybe he was lazy). When I went to get the prescription fixed, he told me that being able to see street signs was a "preference" and that I would be legal to drive with them even though I reiterated that I couldn't see street signs walking down the street. After he used the word "preference" several times, I kept my cool but told him I felt judged. I told him I felt judged several times but he kept using that word "preference" while grudgingly trying to help me. I mentioned my occupation in context and then he became verbally abusive telling me all these stereotypes about my occupation. At this point, I again kept my cool and he didn't stop the verbal abuse until I mentioned that my husband is also a physician and then he became tolerable. I realize that he is a surgeon, but I wouldn't let anyone that arrogant near my eyes with a knife especially someone who thinks that the solution for him making a mistake is to become verbally abusive. I wish I had read the reviews here sooner because it seems that other people were also given an incorrect prescription.
Had an extremely similar experience to the review left by Louise Spergel. The first time I came in and got my exam done, Dr. Fung explain that he'd be giving me a lower prescription than what my current one was so that it would cause my eyes less strain. I thought that sounded fine because obviously he has the degree and I don't. When I got the glasses with my new prescription, after the initial few days of adjusting that comes with getting new glasses, I found that I was still unable to see things like street signs and oncoming vehicles clearly, especially in less than perfect lighting. I couldn't recognize a friend standing four feet away from me because the lighting was dim. I was extremely disoriented and squinting all the time, which was giving me headaches and also straining my eyes. I explained all of this to Dr. Fung at a secondary appointment I scheduled to update my prescription, and he spent most of the appointment trying to bulldoze me into agreeing with him that the prescription was fine and that it isn't necessary to see things very far away anyway. He kept saying "No, you can see, just not as clearly as you want." I work at a climbing gym, I need to be able to see far away to ensure that everyone is safe. If I can't clearly see then that is an issue. I'm a young woman, if I'm walking around at night I need to be able to see as clearly as possible. He was refusing to understand this, but begrudgingly changed my prescription because I wouldn't budge, saying "Fine, I'll just give it to you." This was the worst experience I've ever had at a doctors office and I won't be coming back here because I felt so disregarded and should not feel like my doctor is being condescending to me. Two stars for the ladies at the front desk and all of the techs that do the initial checks, they're fabulous.
Why one star? Because Dr. Fung does not understand that "no" is a complete sentence. I said no dilation. Gave him my reasons. But because he is more surgeon than eye doctor, he kept pushing at me to do it.. Yes as a graduate from Cornell Med School, I understood why, but also knew it would not change anything right now.finally got up to leave. After that he gave me a perfunctory eye exam. A prescription I don't trust. And now I am going to spend $1000 going back to my eye doctor in nyc, for a real eye examine. It broke my own rule, never go to a doctor that is a surgeon ( unless I need surgery),I am glad others had better experiences with him. As for me I am furious and a bit traumatized.
I was very hopeful that this would be a positive experience, unfortunately it was very disappointing. I was going to Vision Works for several years to have my eyes checked and get an updated perscription, but 3 family members and colleagues suggested I try Dr. Fung. I have to say he is a very nice man. However, for the first time in 35 years I was given the wrong prescription and charged an additional $50, just to have it printed. Apparently, not everyone gets charged for their prescription. Not sure what qualifies one person to get charged and another to get their prescription free, especially when they have the same insurance. Too much inconsistency for me to revisit. I ended up going back to Vision Works, happily.
Love Dr Fung! He made me feel at ease. I had to have laser surgery for the pressure behind my eye.
His staff was very attentive.
I had a great experience with Dr. Fung today removing a cyst from my eye lid line. I am a huge needle-phobe so this was a struggle for me. Dr. Fung and his team were compassionate and worked quickly.
Dr Michael Fung is a great Dr. He has been my Eye Dr for 6 years. Great bedside manner.
