Lappen Eye Care (Pittsburgh)

The good: staff was nice and friendly The bad: Glasses were definitely pricey. Worse: We got the glasses insured. And we used it when needed. My daughter has been going to school basically blind for over a month now. There was never any follow up. When I called to find out where they were, they told me the lab said they were shipping them out Friday, so they should get them by Tuesday. It's Wednesday, so I called. I was told they'd call the lab again. At this point, I just want a full refund and to go somewhere else. Follow up: After a few phone calls from family, they allowed my kid to use an alternate pair of glasses for free until her glasses came in. And once the glasses came in, they gave her a second/backup pair for free also. Extra points for resolving customer care.

This is an old-fashioned small business that knows how to treat customers right. And they really know what they're doing. While I was there I saw many people come in needing various things. All of them left happy. Edit: We've now bought glasses here three times. Still a great place for it. Dr Lappen is highly enthusiastic about his work and puts a lot into it. I always get what I expect, and I've never come across a bad frame in their selection. You will pay more here than if you went to Walmart. But I think you also get more.

The people at this location were so VERY kind, social and EXTREMELY HELPFUL!! The manager Tonya was an absolute doll and helped me find the kind of glasses that I not only love but she also took the time and had patience helping me find a pair that makes me feel as good on the inside as they make me look on the outside! Will be coming back again and telling everyone I know asking or looking for glasses that you can find your best friend in someone at this location, someone who wants you to feel good about what glasses you buy and thinks about your best interest! Doctor Lappen is not one to leave out after giving the best and most thorough eye exam! Thank you Lappen Team

My eye exam was done efficiently, and with care to get my prescription just right. My glasses basically give me 'eagle vision'. The problem is that the frames they offer are on the pricey side, and the sales pitch is more than a little aggressive. It is assumed you are getting their frames from the moment you sit down. Also, expect emails and texts telling you it's time for your next eye exam. My eyes haven't changed. I may have to tell them to take me off their list.

I really enjoyed Dr. Lappen and how he is with his patients but over the years with high turnover there has been always issues with the staff and knowledge. One year we were told we had to pay a copay in which they ended up refunding us which was incorrect that we could have waited until insurance processed. This year was the icing on the cake, they would not follow their CONTRACT with Davis Vision by ordering through the formulary in which Davis handled directly with them. For three plus years they have processed my insurance wrong through allowance making me pay out of pocket for lenses where I could have gotten 4 boxes for free through insurance. Please be aware of your benefits before going to this practice. Their lack of communication and not calling back when you bring up issues is also a problem. I will not be returning to this practice

Edit- my review is for the one in the south hills Best place for glasses in the city. Perfectly ran by some amazing ladies that don't mess around and get you the best price under your insurance. I got some sick ray bans for $100 and change and my last glasses with insurance cost me $400 at another place

What a wonderful Eyeglass Store. The Staff is so friendly. We got to meet the owner, very lovely Woman, and The Doctor They Use is worth every Penny! We're new to Pittsburgh,and I'm Very Glad we Found This Lovely Place! Thanks Optical Outlet! :) Highly Recommend it for your Eye Care!

I found this location based off of a google search and I am so thankful I did. Dr. Lappen was amazingly friendly and informative during my appointment. Additionally, Mandy and Linda were incredibly helpful with not only helping me understand my insurance (I'm a 24 year-old student who gets insurance through the gov't and it rarely makes sense to me) but also in finding new frames. They pulled out frames that fit perfectly to the description I explained and even helped me narrow them down to decide on the perfect pair for me. Highly recommend based off of friendliness, professionalism, and the level of help they were willing to give!
