I have known Dr. Oefinger for many years, through many changes in my eyesight. I have always found him to be a capable, kind doctor. He is always available to answer any questions and concerns that I may have. I would recommend him to anyone looking for an eye care specialist with a kind and caring attitude. You won't find anyone better.
If zero stars were allowed that it what would be given. I sent my 18 year old son in for a routine contact fitting which he has had done through a previous physician out of state. I understand (kind of) the reason for a new physician insisting on another fitting. They can charge for it. Not only did this place charge my vision insurance, they charged my medical insurance. They didn't perform any extra tests. When asked about the double billing I was basically told too bad, that's how they do things. I switched to another eye doctor for my visit (same as my son) no billing issues, no problems! Double billing is shameful!
Horrible experience, and very unethical. Put claims into my vision insurance and health insurance, for "extra" unexplained exam items, without explaining this to me before the exam.
I picked out frames, they called a week later and said the frame I picked (which is supposed to be covered under my vision plan), was going to cost me an additional $40. I refused, and went back to the office to pick out another frame, which was covered. When I asked why the original frames I picked out weren't covered, I was shown a document that was printed out by their office, that explained four different percentages, that made absolutely no sense. Apparently, they were showing me what THEY get reimbursed for frames. I'm still unsure of why they showed me that. Their business and income is not my concern. Hesitantly, I picked out another set of frames that wouldn't cost me any extra.
I asked for my prescription, so I could order prescription sunglasses online. At first they refused to give me my prescription, asking me why I wanted it. I did eventually get it, after they offered a "one time deal" on sunglasses from them, which would have cost over $300....
Once I got back to my office, I felt extremely uneasy about this whole transaction, so I called their office to cancel my eyeglass order, and get a refund for any overage I had paid them. At first, I was told they couldn't cancel the order because they had already placed it. I pushed the issue, because I had JUST left their office. Clearly the glasses weren't being made already. When we discussed the refund, they said I'd have to wait until they figured out what my insurance reimbursed them for. Well, my vision plan has a $10 copay for an eye exam. That's all I should owe them.
I then called Spectera, my insurance provider. They called Oefinger's office, and were told that I wouldn't be issued a refund until they get the frames back that they had just mailed out. Truth is, they sent out the display frames, which were too narrow for my face, which I was told were available in different sizes. So, I would have ended up with glasses that didn't fit correctly.
In my opinion, Oefinger is unethical, untruthful, and it's clear that this is a failing business, taking advantage of insurance and their clients in an attempt to dig out of financial ruin.
Stay away!! This man is a money hungry shark. After getting a subpar eye exam (I've had a lot in my life), he tried to force me into buying frames from him. When I said I would like to look elsewhere, he sent me home with 5 frames to "consider". I asked for my prescription several times and he said he'd give it to me but never did. While paying my copay, I again asked the receptionist for a copy of my prescription and she told me I could "get it tomorrow", I'm assuming when I came back with the frames. I left, but feeling uneasy i went back and returned the frames and again asked for my perscription. I was met with attitude, and after 20 minutes I was given someone else's perscription, which I didn't notice until I got home. I went back for a THIRD time, this time demanding a refund, which I was denied. They also denied ever hearing me ask fory perscription, which was ridiculous. These people are the worst, and clearly he's trying to save a failing business and I can see why.
I have been a patient of Dr.Oefinger for over 20 years. He is a brilliant doctor that is always up on the latest medical breakthroughs. His office has a great selection of frames at reasonable prices and they are of great quality. I highly recommend Dr. Oefinger.
