Vanderbilt Eye Institute: Louise Ann Mawn, MD

Dr Mawn treated me for a severe eye infection. After the surgery she visited each day during the week of my hospital stay. It took several months of treatment with many office visits and my eye is completely healed. I am so grateful to have been under her care.

Ms. Mawn performed a surgery on me in 2004 and choosing her was one of the worst decisions of my life. I have spent the past two decades trying to undo the damage that resulted from that procedure. I met with two other ocularplastic surgeons soon after my procedure and they were both really surprised she ever recommended it based on my history. I was very young at the time and really trusted Vanderbilt since I had been going to them since I was a child. My advice to anyone considering her is to get multiple opinions before moving forward. Not doing this cost me thousands and impacted my self image.

Dr. Mawn is the definition of what a doctor should be. She listened and was incredibly thorough. She put my mind at ease and it was a blessing and an answered prayer to be able to be seen by her. Thank you Dr. Mawn and Dr. Schultz.

Dr. Louise Mawn performed my husband's Frontalis Sling surgery. He has a neuromuscular disease (OPMD) that causes droopy eyelids. Dr. Mawn and her assistants did a fabulous job! She also removed a blueberry-sized cyst from my left eye on an emergency basis. A very tricky surgery that could've gone very wrong in less skilled hands. Saved my eye and my sight!

Went in for a routine eye exam. Was told covered by my vision insurance. Did not need glasses, reading glasses without prescription recommended (no medical issues). Over six months later I get a bill. They incorrectly charged as as medical visit to my Vision insurance, which paid the standard cost for a routine eye exam, but not for a medical visit. I was billed the difference of $372. My vision insurance tried helping me by asking the clinic to bill my medical insurance, but as this was now eight months later and as it was not a medical visit but a routine eye exam, this was not covered by my medical insurance. Ultimately. I ended up paying the bill of close to $400 out of pocket for a one time eye exam. This review is not related to provider care (provider was great), but this has caused considerable stress and headache. Cost of health care is related to health and this needs to be acknowledged.

Dr Stephen Kim did a great job removing the scar tissue from the retina in my right eye. I was going blind in that eye. Dr Podoll did a great job removing my cataract in left eye. With the implant I see 20/20. Am grateful for both doctors!

First, this review is not directed to the provider, Dr. Mathe. She was a great provider and very professional. However, I am very disappointed with the staff at the front desk and the billing department of the location at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The error was made by the lady who checked me in. I asked her to verify that everything was okay with my insurance. She stated that "she was on the insurance's website and all I would have to pay was my co-pay of $30." I received a $439 bill from a mistake that was made on their behalf. I have tried multiple times to have this resolved, but they claim there is nothing they can do. I would not recommend going to this office. Very disappointed from this experience. This is not how Vanderbilt should treat their patients.

She took excellent care of my son and wouldn't want any other looking after me or my family.
