UVA Ophthalmology - West Complex

I saw Dr Amy Lance on 11/12/25 . It was NOT a good experience. Sue did not offer me a full eye exam with the dilating drops - I had to talk her into it in spite of the fact that she said in the appointment that she recommends a full eye exam once a year and in spite of the fact that I told her I haven't had an eye exam in 18 months . After the appointment it took 15 days to get my prescription at the pharmacy because the office failed to fill out a pre authorization request for my insure be for the prescriptions that were denied. It took many phone calls and my chart correspondence with the make Stephanie - I believe - I might be wrong about the name - I also was able to talk to the medical director and tell him about my bad experience in his clinic - NOT HAPPY WITH THOSE CLINIC !!!

Dr. Kaufmann is "everything"!! I would recommend him to ANYONE for contacts. He is so POSITIVE AND INSPIRING. I thought there was no help for my vision and he helped with what 3 other providers could not '" ROCK STAR FOR SURE"!!!!

Your triage system is a tragedy waiting to happen... oh wait, tragedy already has happened and people have lost their eyesight!!!! NOTHING has changed. Get rid of the train wreck centralized call center and do better for patients and staff

I requested an appointment online on 11/27/24. They called me today 12/30/24!! I didn't even bother asking when there was an appointment. They are usually months out. This is horrible. I said I no longer needed one which was true. I went elsewhere.

These folks have been wonderful, highly competent and helpful throughout my experience with ocular melanoma (OM). Their knowledge level and expertise has rivalled even some of the (literally) world-class professionals I've worked with in other states in the US. I'd recommend them to anyone. The downside is that UVA Ophthalmology is literally the *only* group in the entire state of Virginia that treats OM (plus a host of other rare afflictions of the eye)...which means their already tiny facilities are always packed, their wait times are astonishingly long, and the lag time between need and appointment can be weeks, if not months. Unfortunately, this isn't at all unusual for a serious research university. More than anything, it's a reflection of how good they are... everyone wants to work with them. Just pack a bag with a snack, a drink, something to do, and an extra sweater in case the AC is on overdrive again. Assume your appointment will take all day, because it might.

The surgeons and staff are amazing. They were really great with our two year old. He was never scared and he wasn't in much pain. His eyes look amazing and I'm very happy with the work they do here. I had to drive six hours one way every time we had an appointment but it was worth it all. He left his binky in the recovery room and they mailed it back to us when they definitely didn't have to do that. The whole staff goes beyond their job description to make things easier for not only the patient but their family as well. Everyone made this a little more bearable for us and I can not stress how grateful I am. The nurses are amazing with kids. I would recommend uva 100 percent. Tristan has strabismus but after surgery you can't even tell anything was ever wrong he looks amazing and I know this will make a huge difference with his future.

Been a patient over 10 years, including twice a year follow ups from our tour overseas in Europe. Would not have anyone else take care of my eyes.
