tl;dr: got charged $240 for a "covered" procedure
My wife and I went in together for our first (and last) eye exams here. At the end, doctor recommended I do a quick 2-minute glaucoma test. We asked whether it was covered by our insurance, and the doctor assured us that it was, so I went ahead. Well the bill came out to $240. The doctor claims they told us it wasn't covered. I guess we hallucinated...
If you must go here, don't accept any extras: your visit may be all smiles, but you won't be smiling when you get that bill.
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Torosian. He is incredibly passionate about what he does and it shows in the way he treats his patients--especially the littlest ones. He was so patient and gentle with my infant, taking the time to answer all of my questions and explain everything clearly. I feel so grateful knowing my child is in such capable and compassionate hands. We're lucky to have found him!
Dr. Watson is a caring physician. She is very patient with her patients. The Lens implants surgery went very well. Highly recommend her.
Dr. Vu-Gia and her assistant Kay are absolutely wonderful! Professional, attentive, and caring from start to finish. Highly recommend them for anyone needing eye care.
This was one of the worst experiences I've had at a medical practice. Northern Virginia Ophthalmology Associates--and specifically Dr. Avesh Annadanam--completely mishandled my visit from start to finish.
They milked both my medical and vision insurance without even checking ahead of time what was covered. I paid my co-pay, and I'm 100% covered by my vision insurance, yet I still got slammed with additional charges for tests I never asked for. No one explained what was or wasn't covered before doing the tests. There was zero transparency, and that's unacceptable.
I only saw the doctor for 5 to 7 minutes, and he was anything but courteous. While my eyes were closed, he used AI to prescribe, without disclosing it. I actually had to ask, "Is someone else in the room?", because it felt that impersonal. No explanation, no consent, no care. He also refused to give me a prescription himself and instead asked for last year's prescription from another provider. I left confused, disappointed, and frankly, shocked by the lack of professionalism.
The billing department reached out two months later with surprise charges. When I tried to explain that they never told me any of this upfront, I was talked over, dismissed, and met with no accountability. It's their job to verify insurance and present charges beforehand and not after the fact.
And the cherry on top? I was stuck there for over three hours for what should've been a 45-minute appointment. I've been seeing ophthalmologists for years, and it's never taken this long. They just wanted to run up unnecessary tests to maximize billing, not care for the patient.
This is not a healthcare practice, it's a money-making machine. It's clear the staff are told to push as much as they can through insurance, regardless of patient need. There's no patient-centered care here at all.
When you schedule an appointment, there's no guarantee you'll be seen by the doctor, so it's difficult to plan or rely on it. I had an appointment on Thursday, July 17 with Dr. Khan. An hour before my scheduled time, I was on my way and called the clinic to confirm the address. That's when I was informed that my appointment had been canceled because the doctor was sick.
While I completely understand that doctors can fall ill, I was disappointed that I received no prior notice -- no phone call, no text, nothing to inform me of the cancellation.
When I asked how I could reschedule, I was told I'd have to go to the end of the line, and the earliest availability for this doctor at this location is in October.
My concern is that if appointments are already booked months in advance, there should be a system in place to accommodate patients when an unexpected change occurs -- especially one initiated by the clinic.
What is your policy in such situations? If the doctor is unavailable, is the patient expected to simply wait several more months, without any priority or alternative options?
If you value your time, don't make an appointment here. The wait time for your appointment can be more than an hour because they overbook.
The office is nice and clean very inviting. I did not wait too long before a medical assistant took me in for some vision tests. They were very friendly and professional. After another short wait Dr Martin came in for the formal exam. He is always very detailed in his check up. I feel very confident my eyes were in good hands. I would highly recommend this practice.
