I assume the Dr's here are great, but the front desk staff are rude and they are the first impression of the business!
It was my first visit and while checking in at my appointed time (I was a minute early), the person at the font desk spent a few minutes with me reviewing my intake paperwork and insurance. The other front desk person inturrupted after about 7 minutes and pointed to their policy that if you are "more than 10 minutes late to your appointment, we can not guarentee you will be seen today." Obviously, I was not late to my appointment and it was extremelly rude to insinuate that I was. After this, the front desk found that my insurance would not cover any of my visit. Fine, I understand. They had my insurance information weeks ago and could have given me that information at that time. However, when I tried to give them feedback that they could prepare their new patients in advance for the $200-$300 it might cost them on their first visit, they just looked at me like I was a crazy person. And told me to "have a nice day." If a business can't take feedback, how can they provide better service to their community?
I have been a patient here since the early 2000's and have always been treated with courtesy and competency.
I had been dealing with an issue which my PCP ultimately recommended that I see my optometrist for. I was unable to get in to see my usual optometrist Dr. Ayers, but the friendly person who I spoke with scheduled me with Dr. Poe. Dr. Poe was very informative, explained my condition to me, and answered my questions in a kind and respectful way.
HOWEVER, the technician who did the initial work up was rude. I tried to answer one of the questions she asked but she cut me off to go on to the next one. I also explained to her that the affected eye was the one that had been corrected for close vision during my cataract surgery several years ago but she proceeded with a vision test. Of course, I could not read even the top line so she made an adjustment and asked me to read the chart again. I hesitated while trying to read it and she raised her voice and said "CAN YOU READ IT OR NOT!?".
Needless to say, this was not a pleasant experience and the first time I was treated with rudeness in all the years I have been a patient there.
8/1/25. I have amended my review to four stars. I had a conversation with the Owner of Island Optometry and I am confident that the issue above is being dealt with appropriately and in a good manner.
I thank IO for hearing my concerns. They are to be commended for their willingness to assume ownership for the problem and proceed accordingly.
Dr Ashley Ayers is superb! We didn't know if she could fill her father's shoes -- she did very much! Thank you for your excellent care. Your staff has been wonderful too.
I received the best eye care at Island Optometry. I have gone to eye doctors throughout the US for the last 25+ years, and Island Optometry has had the best customer service, flexibility, and reliability I have ever experienced. From the people on the phones to the doctors I have seen, all were very professional, welcoming, and listened to my issues. The doctors caught issues other eye doctors missed. They unfortunately no longer take my insurance, but I will go back for any serious issues, as I trust them above the rest.
Due to eye infection,
they kindly gave me an immediate appointment.
Super nice people. Helpful, thorough and informative are best way to describe my visit.
Highly recommend this office for any eye needs.
Thank you so much for seeing me on very short notice.
Excellent service providers .
Last week I had a mishap with my glasses that resulted in one of the sidepieces getting detached. The mechanism was a bit tricky and I realized I couldn't reattach it myself. Although I had purchased the glasses while traveling abroad, I stopped in at Island Optometry to see if they might be able to fix the problem. They did so immediately in a thoroughly professional and friendly manner, and refused to take any money for the repair.
So glad I called and they were able to fix my glasses!
I was visiting family in the San Juan Islands and had a small piece of my Silhouette glasses break just before my trip started. I brought an old set with me and they were able to swap parts from the old pair to repair my broken pair. This was all done on super short notice and the repair was very quick, which saved me a bunch of time as I was able to catch the next ferry back to the island. It was a 6 experience!
Dr Poe and her team got me in right away to treat my eye issues, which I thought was just my allergies, nope! Something else entirely. Went in for my follow up got a new script for glasses as well. Such nice professional folks!
