If you have a loved one with cancer please don't take them here, if it's your only option, advocate for yourself. Deeply disappointed and heartbroken with the care my dad received here.
After his cancer returned in 2023, we were referred to Madison for a "surgery consult." We waited weeks for that appointment, only to be told he wasn't a surgical candidate and was sent back to La Crosse. That delay cost valuable time when he could have started treatment sooner. Then we had to wait to see an oncologist in La Crosse. We advocated for them to start his treatment ASAP. There was some pushback on their end despite UW-Madison urging them to start immediately.
After one month of chemo, his cancer spread and he needed a catheter. In the middle of a round of chemo a they removed his catheter during treatment without antibiotics. His whit blood count was 0.8. He went septic days later and almost died. He was hospitalized for over two weeks, including more than a week in the ICU.
This entire experience caused unnecessary suffering and delays in care that could have been prevented. I hope Gundersen reviews cases like this to ensure other families don't go through the same thing.
I was admitted to Gundersen Emplify in November after a traumatic accident that left me with a broken femur in three places and a 25-stitch head laceration. My experience varied dramatically between departments.
The ambulance team, ER staff, and especially the ICU provided outstanding, compassionate, and consistent care. Special thanks to Allie, Carly, Stacie and Dr. Loomis in ICU for going above and beyond during an incredibly painful and frightening time. My surgeons, Dr. Chen and Dr. Zachron, were exceptional as well.
However, my experience on the OR/post-op floor was disappointing. Basic communication, accuracy, sanitation, and organization were inconsistent. The daily whiteboard was often wrong or not updated, information from staff conflicted, and some did not sanitize their hands upon entering or leaving the room. I also witnessed concerning cleaning practices and experienced avoidable insurance and prescription confusion. The virtual checkout process was also impersonal and allowed background audio of other patients info. However, with this being said, the people on this floor were great and made the best of the situation, shout out to Brian, Paul, Margaret, Marie and CNA Kate.
Gundersen has incredible professionals, but my stay showed gaps in consistency between departments. I hope my feedback helps drive improvement so every patient receives the same quality of care I experienced in the ICU.
Went to urgent care on thanksgiving. Was explicitly told I was in urgent care NOT the emergency room and when I received my bill, I have an Emergency Room charge. Called billing and they said they can send for review but that based on how I was Triaged, whatever that means, I was charged correctly. Will never go to this location again since the Urgent care and Emergency Room share a check in desk/area and apparently that's enough to force a charge through despite being told by multiple people that I was not in for Emergency Room care
UPDATE: received a response stating that due to the shared department technicality they cannot change my bill to remove the charge for an emergency room despite them admitting that I was not seen in an Emergency room. This would not happen at the location in Onalaska due to them being separate departments and I should not be charged an additional $219 due to a technicality that is being taken advantage of. Will continue to not pay that charge and will never return to this location since technically charging people more money is more important.
My father was admitted into the emergency room and ICU for a medical event. The nurses, physician assistants and doctors were all very thoughtful and kind, what you'd expect and want to see taking care of your loved ones. You definitely don't see this in the big cities where patients are treated like a number. It's been a while since I have been back in La Crosse but seeing the treatment my father received just reminds me of how amazing the healthcare system is for a town of this size.
I do think they're the best doctors in the area. However, as they merge with Emplify they got rid of basic wet preps. Suddenly a basic lab test for BV/yeast went from a couple hundred dollars to over $1,200!!! for the lab alone. For something I already knew was the issue based on previous experience. The shock of that bill after having the same appointment earlier this year for hundreds less was sick.
Beware of the new eye surgery doctor, Dr. Funk. He absolutely ruined my eyes, and the hospital will not do anything about it! I literally have to carry around 4 different strengths of cheater glasses to see. I can not even watch TV eleven feet away. I can now see super far away, but nothing within 11 feet, I'm blind. I'm warning, do not get Lasik from Dr Funk at Gundersen lutheran! They said they would do free touch ups or enhancements for the first year and yet he refuses to do any touch-ups or enhancements to fix my eyes.
Lack of diagnosis...misdiagnosis
Poor billing...sadly gundersen has, in my book has crumbled. Lost their way
Patient Care never called me back. I reckon that's because they read my charts and realized how many times they failed me.
If you have the option...try other avenues.
First off all I was,was there guinea pig, all the drugs they gave made me way worse and they gave me a pml and wouldn't own up too it,and dismissed me just mayo clinic did on stem cells, needless too say I found great care from trustem cell therapy and I'm finally feeling better instead of worse
