I had advanced cataracts in both eyes. An optometrist told me that the hypermature cataract in my right eye was the thickest one he had ever seen. Hypermature cataract surgery carries significantly higher risks than surgery on an immature cataract. A hypermature cataract can also lead to glaucoma. Immediate surgery became imperative. I visited one of the leading cataract surgery providers in Springfield. The ophthalmologist who conducted my examination is well - renowned and has practiced for many decades both here and abroad. He told me in no uncertain terms that my prospective surgery would be very difficult. He said there were no guarantees, and that possible surgical complications included retinal detachment, which could cause total vision loss. The doctor also said he would have to place me under general anesthesia, which is quite unusual for cataract surgery. I informed him that I had a close relative who died under general anesthesia, and he said "no doctor on the planet will attempt this surgery on you without admitting you to a hospital and placing you under general anesthesia". I left that clinic more terrified than ever. I began researching other surgeons, and in what I consider to be an act of Divine Providence, I discovered Dr. Shachar Tauber and his talented staff at Mercy Eye Specialists. When I met Dr. Tauber, he immediately put me at ease. Dr. Tauber compassionately explained to me that he intended to perform my surgery using a femtosecond laser on an outpatient basis. He did not intend to hospitalize me or place me under general anesthesia. I conducted copious research on Dr. Tauber, and learned that he is one of the most gifted and admired eye surgeons in the entire nation. Dr. Tauber has been a professor at Yale University, holds multiple patents, has performed tens of thousands of surgeries, and was an early advocate for the femtosecond laser. Every time I read anything about Dr. Tauber, I became more convinced that he was the right choice, the best choice, indeed - the only choice for me. My first surgery was scheduled quickly after the initial consultation. As I was being wheeled into the operating room, I had very little anxiety. I literally did not feel a thing during the surgery. After what seemed like a short time, I heard Dr. Tauber say "we have 99 percent of that big old cataract out". A couple of minutes later, he said "got it", and then he said "the surgery went perfectly". When they took me off the table and placed me into a chair, I opened my eyes, and was overcome with emotion. I could immediately see clearly out of an eye with which previously I saw only light and shadows! Still a bit loopy from the surgical pharmaceuticals, I kissed Dr. Tauber's hand, as tears of relief and joy washed over me. My second surgery was scheduled for two weeks later. The cataract in the second eye was very large and mature also, but had not yet reached the hypermature stage. During the surgery, Dr. Tauber had to perform an emergency procedure within my eye, separate from the actual cataract operation. Both procedures were highly successful. Today, I have close to 20/20 vision in both eyes. I once was lost, but now I'm found. Was blind, but now I see. Because of Dr. Tauber's amazing grace, mastery, and preeminence, I look forward to a full and happy life. Dr.Tauber is probably one of the best Drs I have been to, very professional, at the same time having a great sense of humor. Dr. Tauber is an amazing doctor. He was very kind and took the time to answer all my questions before and after my surgery. He has great staff members as well. I definitely recommend them to anyone and everyone who needs this type of surgery.

Dr. Tauber has been very helpful and very compassionate when he explained both cross-linking surgeries. I also have to give a special shoutout to his assistant Whitney who has been a great help when helping Dr. Tauber perform my corneal cross-linking surgery and talking about hip hop music and having a conversation with me during the procedure. After both surgeries I experienced very little to no pain, if there was 5 more stars, Dr. Tauber and Whitney would absolutely positively receive 10 stars for their compassionate and supportive words they had for me before and after surgery on both my left and right eyes. Dr. Tauber is God's girt of sight to so many people. My son Jamie can testify to that. Jamie received cornea transplants and cataract surgery with Dr. Tauber and his clinic. Dr. Tauber performed my eye surgery back in 2012-2013. I was legally blind without my glasses at 21 years old. He made my time the most comfortable experience I have ever had. It's been 10 years and I still have 20/15 vision.
