The staff at Bright Eye Consultants were wonderful, professional, welcoming, and very kind. Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. O'Brien was the complete opposite. I understand that examining a child's eyes can be challenging, but the way he spoke to me and handled my daughter was extremely unprofessional. When my daughter became visibly upset and I reached out to comfort her, he told me to "please stop" because I was "distracting" her. She was scared, crying, and in an unfamiliar environment, and I was shocked to be spoken to that way. He was also very overly forceful when holding her head in place, which only made her more distressed. There is simply no excuse for the lack of compassion and respect we experienced today. I do not recommend scheduling with Dr. O'Brien. The rest of the staff was great, but the doctor's behavior overshadowed everything.
My daughter had her first appointment here today, and I couldn't be more pleased. Dr. O'Brien is professional, thorough, and truly has the child's best interest in mind. Some reviews mention his bedside manner, but I think that comes down to personality--he's direct, and I appreciate that honesty. We waited about 20 minutes in the lobby, which is completely reasonable, and the appointment itself was efficient without feeling rushed. Considering there are only two pediatric ophthalmologists in the city, I expected a much longer wait, so this exceeded my expectations. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. O'Brien and his team!
Dr O'Brien and his assistant are very kind and knowledgable and thorough.
Although the front office staff and one lady in particular is very rude (Autumn). Wont even give you the time of day to explain what you need then proceeds to say, I'm so confused. Well yes if you would give me time to explain, you would understand. And my bill has been mailed to the wrong address twice even though I've told this same lady to correct the address twice in the past year. She swears the address is correct in the system but yet the bill is still being mailing to the wrong address. I know it's hard to find staff. But I recommend not having an extremely rude receptionist that people see and talk to first before they talk to the dr.
The front desk did not clarify to us that they were out of network for us.discoverd later that we owe $230 to them. the staff needs to develop more empathy for patients understanding their situation
My child has been seen several times at this office. I was hesitant to leave a review, but after being several families on special needs platforms searching for a pediatric ophthalmologist, I am hoping they check reviews before making this their choice.
Our first visits were okay. Not impressive, but not knowing what to expect, I didn't have solid complaints except the wait is insane for ANY child, especially an exceptional child who struggles with waiting. The lobby is incredibly cramped. At one visit, we were placed in an even smaller "holding room" with 2 other families. I asked to go wait in my car and receive a text.
The office staff was friendly. I commend them and the assistants for their ability to deal with their superior. As I felt he wasn't very respectful to them in front of patients.
The doctor seems very knowledgeable, but he does not have a great bedside manner. I understand sound sensitivities and that doesn't bother me in the least. Earplugs are totally not the issue. However, he does not know how to speak, listen, or calm a special needs child. My son is autistic and he did great at the first part of the visits. However, after waiting for and hour, having his eyes dilated, then waiting over another hour, he was done and in sensory overload. He wasn't combative at all, but he was whiney, fidgety, and vocal. The doctor acted fearful of him. He seemed very uncomfortable and overwhelmed during the exams. He was short and cross with my child and myself. He sped through hastily and both my child and myself left exhausted, sad, and angry.
I feel that this office would greatly benefit from professional development training related to working with special needs families, young neurodivergent and neurotypical children, and speaking to parents. Thinking your child may have a severe visual impairment is a fearful thing and a caring and empathetic provider should be available to help families understand their child's optical needs.
They are one of the only options in the surrounding area, so we are stuck. But EVERY TIME WE COME, we wait forever for the doctor to see us.
This appointment really made me make this review. We were the first appointment of the day at 8 0'clock right when they open. We were the first ones here.
Almost an hour later, we are still waiting to see the doctor. This is so ridiculous. I will have to continue coming due to lack of options, and the staff are very friendly but their lack of a commitment or respect for patients time makes it extremely difficult to be happy about coming.
My son has been seeing Dr. O'Brien for around 9 years now. While the doctor can be a little eccentric, that is the sign of a brilliant mind. My son has to be dilated every time due to known genetic condition and the exam is always very thorough. The staff is always friendly and smiling. My son loves getting a coin at the end for the toy vending machine in the lobby. Much cooler than a drawer or chest full of toys.
This is hands down the worst eye doctor/office I have ever encountered, and I have been wearing glasses since I was toddler aged so I am no stranger to this sort of thing. We were referred here by my daughter's pediatrician shortly after she turned 2 due to her eye crossing. Dr O'Brien was extremely unprofessional in my opinion. Seemed to be in a rush to get my daughter's exam done and over with and therefore made no effort to make her comfortable with what he was doing. Mind you for someone that specializes in working with kids, you would think he would at least make an effort to make the patient comfortable especially when it is their first time having an exam like this and they are a young child. He entered the room and began sticking his tools in my daughter's face with no warning or attempt to make her comfortable. She freaked out and began to cry/scream. Instead of trying a different approach he requested my partner to hold our child down so he could complete the exam. His approach is absolutely horrible as it will only lead to a fear of the eye doctor for a child that small. Not only that but when my daughter began to scream in fear he used his fingers to plug his ears, and then proceeded to put in ear plugs a few moments later. Once he completed his exam, my daughter was still very worked up, instead of allowing us a moment to calm her he proceeded to try to talk to me about treatment for her eye issues. She needed glasses. He said, and I quote "which is clearly going to be an issue" and gestured to my child, implying that getting her to wear the glasses was going to be a problem, which I found extremely unprofessional, and he was 100% wrong about that, but I digress.
Against my better judgment I returned to his office 2 more times. Both times we waited 3 hours to be seen. The final straw was at our last appointment, we waited in the waiting room and were taken back to the exam room, nurse or whoever (honestly not sure) asked some intake questions and then took us to another room. We were placed in a very small room (similar in size to their other exam rooms) filled with toys to wait. There were 3 other adults and children also stuffed into this room. The nurse put us in there and shut the door. The room was so crowded there wasn't even a place for me to sit down, so I had to awkwardly stand in the corner of this tiny room, basically on top of a bunch of strangers and their kids. Never in my life have I experienced anything like this in a doctors office. I was completely appalled. We proceeded to sit in that room for nearly 2 hours before we were seen, I honestly thought they had forgotten about us in there. That was it for me, I will never go back, and I will NEVER recommend this place to anyone. It is absolutely horrible and this man does not belong working with children AT ALL.
Word of advice to this office, if you cannot see your patients in a timely manner, maybe that means it is time for your scheduling to be reevaluated.
