I recently had SMILE laser eye surgery at Optegra Manchester by Dr Shafiq Rehman. This has proven to be the worst decision I have ever taken thus far in my life and will likely remain the worst decision I have ever made in my lifetime. My surgery is regarded as a success by the surgeon however I believe this is nothing further from the truth. What you need to understand is that visual acuity (how well you see on the Snellen chart) and visual quality are 2 VERY different things. Visual quality is MUCH more important and unfortunately I have learnt this the hard way by blindly trusting the surgeon and optometrists at the clinic. Whilst I can now see 20/20, my vision quality has suffered massively. I now have constant double vision (ghosting) and see sentences stacked on top of each other when trying to read. This makes it extremely hard for me to do my job in IT. All screens look horrendous and everything has a ghost image underneath the main image. Text is scrambled and has weird glows around it that make it look neon. Car lights/shop lights or any other light source all have this same downward streaking with an extra image of the original. I have floaters that constantly move around in my eyes. As someone who is (or should I say was) an avid tech enthusiast, these complications have completely ruined my hobbies and are debilitating. I promise you living with these complications is much worse than it sounds or looks like from pictures you see online. This has severely deteriorated my quality of life physically and mentally. These complications could have been avoided had I been properly informed by the surgeon. I have now learnt I had many contraindications before surgery however I was told by Dr Shafiq Rehman that this surgery will "fix" my vision and "95%" of my vision with glasses will be restored. Unfortunately as a young 23 year old I was none the wiser and trusted Dr Shafiq Rehman with the only pair of eyes I will have in my lifetime. I have recently graduated university after 3 years of hard work and thought this would be a good decision to make with my first proper salary to improve my quality of life. Now I am unsure if I can continue working in the same field due to the visual disturbances I have whilst looking at screens. It is honestly extremely upsetting and feels like I have committed self mutilation - and even worse, paid PS5000 for it. All refractive surgeries induce higher order aberrations in your eyes due to flattening of your perfectly natural shaped cornea. Light is scattered and does not focus properly on your retina anymore. Higher order aberrations are optical distortions that cannot be corrected by glasses or regular contact lenses. Your vision quality will be WORSE than it is with glasses. This is a 100% GUARANTEE. Now the severity of this depends on multiple factors, such as how large your prescription is, the size of your pupils, etc. I had a very large prescription with very large pupils. I am not an optometrist/ophthalmologist and (rightly) had no knowledge about this prior to surgery. It was Dr Shafiq Rehman's ethical and moral responsibility to warn me about this, but unfortunately he had financial interest in me which I failed to realise. The clinic has been of no help to try and diagnose my symptoms. I have looked at all of my documentation and scans to try and decipher what is causing my issues specifically. When discussing my findings with the optometrists they told me: "give us a few days and we will know as much as you do". This is completely unacceptable. If you are recommending people to have refractive surgery, you should absolutely know the ins and outs of everything before doing so. There is a reason all of the optometrists and the surgeon are wearing glasses themselves. Don't make the same stupid mistake as I did and fall into the trap of believing you will enjoy life without glasses. Stick with glasses/contacts, cherish your healthy un-operated eyes, and stay FAR away from any unnecessary refractive surgery unless you want to live a miserable life!

I've had both of my eyes done for cataracts recently over the period of two months.. I'm an extremely anxious and nervous person and was reluctant to go through with it without a form of general anesthesia but the staff and doctors were brilliant in reassuring me, calming me, and explaining everything thoroughly.. many thanks to Jason, Brenda and Kathryn for being so kind and patient with me ... and to the kind hearted and professional surgeons Dr. Habiba Saedan and Dr. Hemmerdinger for my new lenses - the world is brighter because of you. Thank you
