AMENDED 2/17/26: Although I received poor information, awful service, and couldn't use the glasses, I need to say that the Optical Department manager called me about the review immediately, apologized, and offered me $90 for my trouble. Apparently, their personnel are all actual trained opticians, which may make my experience even more problematic. Nevertheless, I thanked her for the call and accepted the gift. I made another appointment to check the prescription, took my favorite old glasses into the optical department, which was open and allowed browsing now. I still didn't find any suitable frames, but an optician was able to identify the manufacturer of my old lenses, even suggesting a boutique clinic/dispensary that might be able to provide them. I was able to purchase lenses($875) to put in some old frames. So with the insurance used ($300)and the cash ($350) outlay for bad glasses, plus $875 for correct lenses, $90 was a nice gesture toward my $1525 glasses.
EARLIER REVIEW: I have purchased glasses at Kaiser and Group Health all my life--I was a customer at Kaiser Clinic in Bellingham, Washington, before I went to Group Health in 1970. I have lived in Olympia for 50 years, and always purchased lenses at Group Health, and now at Kaiser. Last year, I dutifully took my prescription to the optical department at Lilly Road, showed them my old glasses, with my -5+ lenses in Zeiss, Ultra High Density 1.74 lenses. I asked several times for the exact same lens specs in my new glasses. The young optical helpers--neither of whom had the training, experience, or knowledge to know any better-- both assured me that the new factory they use offered the exact same product as my previous ones. Then the trouble began. They ordered the wrong frame, so 6 weeks later, I came in to find the frames were not the ones I ordered. Profuse apologies ensued. I pointed out that the lenses were also not ultra high index and looked like cheap, thick plastic. The woman manager assured me that the frames were the problem and the correct frame would contain the correct lenses. Another month went by. I waited in the corridor (Kaiser only allows one person at a time into the optical showroom!) until allowed to pick up my glasses. They were awful, and the fitter didn't even bother to try fitting them--they simply didn't fit. The lenses were so heavy that my nose had deep dents in ten minutes, and the glasses fell off my face when I looked down! They were obviously not ultra high or even high index--not even close to the ultra high index! But it was closing time, and the fitter/receptionist (not an optician!) gaslit me, saying they were just the same, pointing to an old brochure for Zeiss lenses. (They don't actually sell Zeiss lenses anymore.) I tried to wear them for a week, even with the discomfort of enormously heavy, thick glasses, but the visual distortion was horrible! And they fell off my face constantly. I called to complain, and was basically told that was the best they had. My prescription barely changed, and my improving nearsightedness would result in thinner, not thicker, lenses! I used to be over -7 in one eye, but are -5.2 & -6.5 now. The frame was the same style and lens area as my previous ones, except for being the wrong size. It was my worst eyewear purchase experience in the 65 years I have worn glasses--since I was ten years old. I put them in a drawer a year ago, and have worn my old scratched ones ever since. Kaiser has lowered standards to the point that any Medicare "Advantage" I may get for a small credit toward lenses is waste of time and money--and I still have no new glasses. I experienced both their ignorance and their efforts to convince me that an inferior product that was twice as thick as my original lenses was the same product. After their attempts to gaslight me, I went to two other optical centers to verify my own eyes--not the same at all!
I am writing this long narrative because I saw that Kaiser had good online reviews, and few complaints--so I wanted to document my awful experience with them.
Dr.ceja,a kaiser permanente optometrist in tacoma, is very friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and beautiful. She is an asset to kaiser Permanente. I highly recommend her.
Same day appointment. Called about 9 was seen at 10:40. DR Harper nice, answered questions fully, got a plan together for treatment, gave me a copy of the after visit summary and a guide for some exercises that might help and 3 hrs later results of x rays available. In previous years appointments were 2+ months. New scheduling process seems to work.
Doctor Christina is professional, personable, wants to accommodate my hearing loss, and is patient as I try to assess the different options, timelines, and contracts.
This was a new patient experience, re establishing care after a move. Every point of contact in this office was great. They were friendly and treated my mother with care while maintaining professionalism. They explained every next step that was to occur in her appointment. They were thorough in answering questions and what we were to do in between our next appointment.
